It’s that time of year where it’s getting colder, in some places it may already be snowing (except for our friends down in Australia), and it all just makes you want to bundle up on the couch with a cup of hot chocolate with a cozy blanket to watch some seasonally themed movies. I made a post about my favorite holiday films a few years ago and so many new ones have come out since then that I thought now would be the perfect time to update my list.
Here are some Holiday Films that I think you’d enjoy watching this season.
The Holiday – This will always be on my list but if you haven’t watched this film you must give a try. It centers on two women, Iris and Amanda, who do a home exchange during the Christmas season to escape their lives for a little bit. While they spend time in each others houses there are of course some fun shenanigans that ensue but they meet people who help them learn about what they do and don’t want out of life.
Single All the Way (Netflix) – Since it’s release in 2021 it has joined my “must watch” list of holiday films and I highly recommend it. The plot centers around Peter, a social media strategist in LA, who convinces his best friend Nick, a kids book author and Task Rabbit, to pretend to be his boyfriend when he goes home for Christmas. But unbeknownst to Peter his mom Carole has already been scheming to set him on a blind date with her spinning instructor, James, and hilarity ensues. Also who doesn’t love Jennifer Coolidge playing the crazy Aunt? Seriously she just knocks it out of the park lol.
The Santa Clause (Disney+ / Amazon) – Okay but who hasn’t seen this one yet? At this point we consider this one a classic right? The film stars Tim Allen who plays Scott Calvin, a toy marketer who is estranged from his son, Charlie, and has a strained relationship with his ex wife and her new husband. On Christmas Eve Scott accidentally causes Santa Claus to fall from his roof to his supposed death and then he and Charlie must finish the late St. Nick’s trip and deliveries which ends with them at the North Pole where Scott learns he must become the new Santa. But can he convince himself and those he loves that he is indeed Santa Claus or will this be the end of Christmas?
Klaus (Netflix) – The animation, the color, the cinematography, and the narrative are just chef’s kiss. Klaus is the the story of how Santa Clause the myth and legend came to be. But if you love animated films, love the holidays, and just want to cuddle up on the couch with a nice blanket and cup of coco, this is definitely going to be a film you will enjoy.
I wanted to include some I am looking forward to watching this holiday season:
Best. Christmas. Ever! (Netflix) – Charlotte and Jackie are two friends from college who send each other holiday letters. Jackie’s life seems perfect in her letters and Charlotte is feeling the the pang of the green-eyed monster over it as she looks at her own life. When their families decide to spend the holidays together at Jackie’s house, Charlotte is determined to prove that Jackie’s life isn’t what it seems — and she may ruin Christmas in the process.
Christmas By Design (Hallmark) – Dalton, a fashion designer, gets accepted into a Christmas challenge to create a new holiday-themed collection and not only finds the inspiration for her next line but decides to redesign her approach to what’s most important in life.
Christmas in Notting Hill (Hallmark) – Graham Savoy, a famous soccer player, has always been too busy for love, but when he comes home to Notting Hill for Christmas, he changes his mind after meeting Georgia – a visiting American and the one person who has no idea who he is.
Hope you enjoy these!
